How to Apply Solacoat Topcoats - Surface Preparation and Application Techniques:
SOLACOAT Cream, provides the highest solar reflectance from the Solacoat colour coatings range, and is a semi-membrane material specifically designed to have a high reflectance to the Suns Solar Rays , with the result that it will assist in reducing the internal temperature of buildings to which it is applied during the hottest summer days, with little wind, being the roof area, and any west facing walls that are also exposed to the sun. It has good architectural appearance as well as durability, water proofing properties and covering power, and thus has an additional advantage of providing an excellent protective coating in lieu of standard paint finishing coatings. SOLACOAT COATINGS will adhere to most surfaces after correct preparation.
DO NOT APPLY TO SURFACE UNTIL THE AIR TEMPERATURE AND THE SURFACE TEMPERATURE ARE 15C AND RISING. STOP PAINTING WHEN TEMPERATURE DROPS BELOW 15C.
DO NOT PAINT WHEN HUMIDITY IS HIGH (Over 85%) as SOLACOAT MAY NOT DRY PROPERLY OR ADHERE TO THE SURFACE AS THEY ARE A WATER-BASED COATING.
IDEAL WEATHER IS A WARM SUNNY DAY.
DO NOT PAINT IN HIGH WIND.
DO NOT PAINT IF RAIN IS PENDING WITHIN 4 HOURS OF COATING HAVING BEEN APPLIED.
The surface preparation for SOLACOAT is similar to that required for paint materials which are water based. The durability of the finished treatment will depend on the effort put in preparing surface to be coated and primer having been applied.
Any surface, prior to the application of any coating should have a thoroughly high pressured washed down to remove dirt and airborne particles. Before applying any coating, ensure that the surface is thoroughly dry, particularly under roof sheeting overlaps and ends.
If the surface corrosion is evident on sheeting (Corrugated Iron, etc). This must be neutralized, otherwise rust will rapidly appear through the coating.
For a corrosion treatment which will have a life similar to that of the coating, (10 years or more) the following method is recommended:
Remove as much of the rust as possible by mechanical means (wire brush etc).
Treat the corroded area completely with a rust converter.
New roofing material generally have a fine coating of oil applied in the manufacturing process and will require degreasing. New material can be considered to be less than 12 months old, and would include Galvanised iron, Zincalume, Colorbond and Aluminium sheeting. All new materials should be washed down with a degreasing agent such as Sol-Prep or contact your local paint supplier.
Surface Priming: *It is highly recommended, that All surfaces that are to painted have a primer applied, this is for New or Existing Surfaces*
New Galvanised, Zincalume or Aluminium Sheeting. Use our water based WB metal primer.
Brick, masonry, plaster, etc. Unpainted surfaces: Use our water based CP Porous primer.
Sand lightly and clean down surface. Apply one coat of Primer/Sealer or Undercoat to seal the surface and prevent absorption that occurs on new plaster. Apply two coats of Solacoat Gloss Acrylic.
Terracotta/Concrete Tiles: Use our CP Porous primer.
Fix any broken tiles and cracks on ridges. After cleaning, apply a primer/sealer or undercoat.Allow to dry, then apply 2 coats of Solacoat.
Timber. Unpainted surfaces: Use our CP Porous primer.
Sand & dust area. Apply one coat of Speed Prep Primer Sealer Undercoat. Allow to dry. Sand down with abrasive paper if necessary. Apply two coats Solacoat Gloss Acrylic.
Previously Painted Surfaces:
Brick, Masonry etc - Remove all loose and flaking paint, rub down chalked surfaces. Sand down glossy areas and spot prime bare areas with Speed Prep Primer Sealer Undercoat. Allow to dry. Apply two coats of Solacoat Gloss Acrylic.
Timber, Previously Painted surfaces - Remove all loose and flaking paint, sand smooth. Wash down chalked surfaces and allow to dry thoroughly. Sand any gloss areas and spot prime bare timber with Speed Prep Primer Sealer Undercoat. Allow to dry. Apply two coats of Solacoat Gloss Acrylic.
Wall Surfaces - Application of SOLACOAT to any wall surface will require prior application of a primer, mainly to minimize the amount of SOLACOAT by providing a non porous surface. This would apply to Masonry Block Walls, Hardiboard Products.
Note: Mould, Moss and Algae must be treated according to the problem.
Following the application of any surface treatment recommended above, SOLACOAT can then be applied. For larger areas we suggest using an Airless Spray unit with a 0.017 ’thou’ tip and a 4/5 and 6 number 17 sprat head. The 2 coats can be applied in one application but overlap each pass by 50% to ensure full coverage. For smaller areas roller or brush application. A second coat will be necessary.
Thinning and Clean Up:
Stir thoroughly before use, and thin with clean water to provide the consistency required. Clean all equipment when finished with warm water and detergent.
Coverage: (Based on two coat system)
Up to 7 square metres per litre for flat steel. 5 square metres for corrugated iron. These figures apply for airless spray guns. Allow more for brush or roller, dark materials, high pitched roofs and higher profile corrugations.
SOLACOAT is non toxic, however provide adequate ventilation during application.
Keep out of the reach of children.
Do not apply at temperatures below 18C or in high humidity as drying may be inhibited.
Do not apply if rain threatens.
Do not apply in high wind.
Dispose of empty cans correctly
If applying to roofs used for the collection of tankage water,disconnect tanks from the roof. Only re-connect after 12mm of rain has fallen on the roofing, if no rain, washdown with hose and light brush.
