How to Apply Solacoat Brick/Concrete/Render Coatings - Surface Preparation and Application Techniques
New Concrete/ Unpainted Surfaces.
Allow new concrete to cure at least 28 days before etching and painting. Remove all traces of grease and other
surface contamination with a suitable cleaner. Allow to dry. Ensure all concrete is acid etched with a mixture of one
(1) part of hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) to three (3) parts water by volume mixed in a plastic container.
CAUTION: ALWAYS ADD ACID TO WATER and USE APPROPRIATE SAFETY EQUIPMENT.
Swab acid solution onto the clean concrete using a mop or soft bristle broom. Vigorous bubbling on the surface
indicates that chemical etching of the surface is occurring. Allow the acid solution to remain on the surface for a
minimum of 20 – 30 minutes. Rinse off thoroughly with clean water. Protect adjacent areas with suitable
equipment. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly – at least 24 hours before using Water Based Paving Paint.
If little or no bubbling of the acid solution occurs on the concrete, then the etching will not be adequate and
adhesion problems of subsequent coatings will exist. Contact Coolshield International Pty Ltd for further assistance or advice.
Previously painted surfaces
Remove all loose and flaking paint, sand smooth as necessary. Wash down chalked surfaces and allow to dry
thoroughly. Perform trial test area for adhesion as recommended above. If adhesion after 48 hours is good then full
coating may be undertaken.
